The Elgin Fire Department is seeking an experienced Assistant
Fire Chief candidate to join its leadership team. Established in
1854, the city of Elgin, Illinois is a historic, culturally and

professional staff of 137 members, including 133 sworn members and
four civilian support personnel. The Assistant Fire Chief works
closely with the fire chief and is responsible for directly
supervising staff support members and shift battalion chiefs. For a

Candidates for the Assistant Fire Chief position should possess
experience, achievement, and abilities in the following areas: -
Required Education and Experience
Strong background in logistics, information systems with an
emphasis in RMS, CAD and communication systems.
Proven background and progressive experience in fire department
management, five or more years of work experience in a staff level
Three years work experience as a Chief Officer is required
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to
graduation from an accredited college or university with a degree
in Fire science or related field.
Valid driver's license and a safe driving record
Illinois Office of the State Fire Marshal, Certified Chief Fire
Officer (or obtain within 2 years of hire)
Incident Safety Officer Certification (or obtain within 1 year of
Current First Aid/CPR certifications
Residency within 12 months
Assist in promoting a climate of positive labor-management
relations, developing respect and trust between the Fire Command
Administration and rank and file personnel of the department, and
provide responsible leadership toward resolving issues of concern
and grievances whenever possible.
Analyze administrative procedures and methods toward establishing
modern practices, including utilization of computer technology for
administrative and operations applications.
Thoroughly review all departmental practices and tactics with a
view toward ensuring that the Fire Department is utilizing
up-to-date, safe, effective procedures and is provided safe, modern
equipment with which to operate.
Maintain and enhance the Fire Department's image of being a
