Description Hillrom's mission is to enhance outcomes for patients and caregivers, every day around the world. Reporting directly to the Vice President of R&D for Patient Support Systems, the Director R&D for PSS Early Innovation will provide vision, direction and overall leadership to build the PSS growth pipeline with advanced solutions for connected care. The focus for our innovation agenda will be active partnerships with key customers to identify and build next generation solutions across the carre continuum (including ICU, med surg, ED, ambulatory centers, post-acute and home care). To create the next generation of connected care solutions, we expect that our newly formed PSS innovation team will need to acquire and deploy technical skills in areas such as advanced patient sensing (contact free, wearables, etc.), data sciences (care data extraction, data warehousing, advanced analytics, and translating the findings into clinical intelligence that is actionable) and machine learning/AI (real time audio and video analytics, voice, and sensor fusion). This new position will provide opportunity to grow not only the into role but also to build an agile, customer focused team dedicated to producing the next generation of breakthrough innovations. The Director of PSS Early Innovation R&D has overall responsibility for leadership and direction of the early innovation technical team: SCOPE

  • Work closely with the Director of Marketing for PSS Early Innovation, engage with key customers to obtain insights into unmet and future needs, industry and technology trends, and opportunities to innovate.
  • Work with the director of PSS Marketing Early Innovation to brainstorm potential solutions to emerging customer needs, quantify and prioritize the growth opportunities, and develop detailed project plans and proposals for breakthrough customer solutions.
  • Working with the Director of EI Marketing and customers, develop phase by phase technology development plans including early customer feedback on new concepts, joint white papers and research, clinical trials and evidence generation, and ROI models as appropriate for each project.
  • Determine make/buy or partnership strategies for the key technologies needed as part of next generation customer solutions. Develop outside partnerships with leading Universities or companies as appropriate to accelerate key technology developments.
  • Recruit, develop and manage a small team of Engineers and scientists skilled in the development of advanced sensing (hardware design, signal processing and algorithms), Data Sciences (device generated, patient generated, EHR, claims), and AI/machine learning (converting raw data into actionable insights, including expertise in video and audio analytics) or other areas of technical expertise needed.
  • Develop preliminary user needs and technical requirements/specifications for envisioned solutions. Gauge progress phase by phase towards technology maturity of advanced solutions resulting in a successful transfer to a new product development team.
  • Work with key stakeholders to create strategic growth plans which fully align with the PSS multi generational product roadmaps and overall strategy.
  • Make final decisions on administrative or operational matters related to financial priorities, assigned projects and personnel.
  • Create plans and drive execution of assigned projects with technical and project management rigor. Qualifications
    • Bachelor's degree and 15 years of experience (Masters preferred) or PhD or MD and 8 years of experience in a relevant field
    • 10+ years of overall leadership experience, 5+ years with a proven track record of success in a supervisory role.
    • Experience in working with customers to translate user needs into successful new products.
    • Med device development experience including regulatory submissions, design controls, clinical evidence generation and successful change management with caregivers.
    • Strategic thinking ability, creativity and 5+ years of experience contributing to and leading business development efforts and business proposals
    • Expertise with clinical data and interoperability standards (CCDA, HL7, FHIR)
    • Proven ability to design and leverage analytic methods to support client needs and client data driven decision-making
